A Practical Business Idea: Enquiry-to-Booking Systems for SMEs

Theophilus Morkporkpor Kudzordzi · 4 min read

An SME does not necessarily need another app. It may need one dependable path from a customer question to a confirmed booking. This is a business idea to validate, not a claim that every business needs automation or that demand is guaranteed.

The problem to investigate

Talk to salon owners, repair services and other appointment-based businesses about where enquiries get lost. Ask how they record a request, check availability and follow up. Observe the process with permission rather than assuming WhatsApp is the problem.

A useful first offer

  • A clear mobile-friendly service page with an enquiry form.
  • A structured request record and an owner-controlled status queue.
  • Booking confirmations and reminders only after the business approves the rules.
  • A handover covering data access, running costs and what happens when a tool fails.

Where AI fits—and where it does not

AI could draft replies or summarise requests, with a person checking the result. Availability, prices and commitments should come from reliable business records, not generated guesses. Collect only necessary customer information and obtain consent before sending it to third-party services.

Validate before expanding

Choose one business and agree on a small paid pilot, its scope and running costs. Compare missed enquiries, response time and owner effort before and after. These are proposed measurements, not results already achieved. Expand only if the owner sees enough value to continue.

Why this direction is relevant

GEA's Digitalize for Jobs programme provides a local reference for SME digital adoption, while McKinsey's Africa research offers broader context for AI. Neither source promises demand for this specific service; the offer above is my own practical interpretation for testing.
