The assignment was to take a salon that ran entirely on phone calls and WhatsApp messages and deliver a live website where customers can see prices and book appointments themselves. The result is a deployed, responsive site covering services, pricing, booking and contact.
What It Is
Adom Beauty & Grooming Services is a working booking website built as a software development assignment for a salon in Accra, Ghana. It presents the full service menu with clear prices, and lets a customer choose a service, pick a time and confirm an appointment in under two minutes.
The build covers the complete customer journey: a homepage that states what the business does and what it costs, a searchable price list, a booking flow with date and time selection, a mobile-visit option with a transparent travel charge, and a WhatsApp channel for customers who prefer to chat.
Problem Identified
The salon handled every appointment by phone or chat. Prices were quoted case by case, double bookings happened, and customers asking for home, hotel or event visits had no way to know the travel charge before committing.
Proposed Solution
A booking website that publishes every service with its price in Ghana cedis, calculates available appointment slots to prevent clashes, shows the mobile-visit surcharge before checkout, and keeps WhatsApp as a fallback for customers who prefer to talk.
Target Users
- Customers booking haircuts, braiding, nails and bridal services
- Clients requesting services at home, hotels, offices or event venues
- Salon staff managing the daily appointment schedule
- The salon owner tracking demand and pricing
Product Thinking
- Publishing the price is the conversion step — a hidden price sends the customer back to WhatsApp.
- Length-dependent styles need a 'from' price plus a quote before work starts, not a fake fixed number.
- The booking form has to work one-handed on a phone over a slow connection.
- The existing habit (WhatsApp) is kept alongside the new flow rather than removed.
Key Features
- Service catalogue with durations and prices in Ghana cedis
- Two-minute appointment booking flow with date and time selection
- Availability logic that prevents double bookings
- Mobile-visit option with the travel charge shown up front
- Deep links from each service card straight into the booking form
- WhatsApp contact channel with a pre-filled message
- Responsive, accessible layout with skip-to-content and descriptive image alt text
Technology & Product Approach
- React and TypeScript front end with a component-driven service and booking UI
- Query-parameter routing so each service card opens the booking form pre-selected
- Slot calculation logic to keep advertised times genuinely bookable
- Semantic HTML, keyboard-navigable controls and alt text for accessibility
- Deployed to a live URL and tested across mobile and desktop widths
Lessons Learned
- Delivered outcome: a live, working booking site replacing an ad-hoc chat process, completed end to end from brief to deployment.
- Writing the pricing rules first made the booking interface far simpler to build.
- Small businesses adopt a new tool faster when it sits beside the channel they already use.
- Clear duration and price data removed most of the back-and-forth before an appointment.
Skills Demonstrated
- Front-end development (React & TypeScript)
- Booking & scheduling logic
- Responsive, mobile-first UI
- Web accessibility
- Pricing & service data modelling
- Deployment of a live product
- Client requirements to delivery
